The Japan Railways group of companies ( JR グ ル ー プ JR Gurupu ) , or simply JR , consists of 8 private companies, between which on 1 April 1987 the railway lines of the previously existing Japanese National Railways (JNR) were divided.
JR Group is the backbone of Japan's railway network. It accounts for a large share of intercity (including high-speed Shinkansen lines) and suburban rail services. There are still strong differences between JR and other private railway companies. For example, on maps their infrastructure is indicated differently.
