According to Cassandra Austin, the novel "Susan" (that was the original name) was written in 1798-1799. In 1803, Austin corrected it for print and sold it to the London book-selling company Crosby & Co for £ 10. But the company, unaware of Austin's authorship, opposed the publication and sent the manuscript to the writer’s brother Henry Austin.

The novel saw the light only after her death, at the end of December 1817 , under one cover with another novel - “The Reason of Reason ”.

The Russian translation of the novel was made by I. S. Marshak .

Story

The story of the seventeen-year-old girl Catherine Morland, a romantic and passionate Gothic literature . Katherine is invited by wealthy neighbors to visit Bath with them. At first, the girl suffers from loneliness, but soon she is introduced to a mysterious young man, Mr. Henry Tilney, and then to other members of his family. At the same time, a lively Isabella Thorpe appears in her circle, who wants to marry Catherine's brother, James. Katherine is at the center of the plot.

Main characters

  • Catherine Morland ( born Catherine Morland ) - a seventeen-year-old girl, absorbed in reading Gothic novels. In childhood, “she was a noisy and mischievous girl” [1] , however, by the age of fifteen, “she began to curl her hair ... her appearance improved, her face was rounded and freshened, her eyes became more expressive, and her figure was proportionate. She stopped being dirty and learned to take care of herself, turning into a neat and pretty girl ” [1] . Loving sister, has a large family. Often Katherine presents herself as the heroine of a Gothic novel. By virtue of her age, she is naive, modest, good-natured and has little knowledge of life. Henry Tilney finds her frank and therefore funny. The character of Miss Morland grows in the course of the novel - learning from her mistakes, she gradually becomes a real heroine.
  • James Morland is the elder brother of Katherine. Is the subject of passionate mutual feelings of girlfriend Catherine Isabella Thorpe.
  • Henry Tilney is a highly educated clergyman (about twenty-five years old), the youngest son of a wealthy Tilney family. For Katherine, he is the personification of a romantic hero . He is sarcastic, intuitively developed and talented, sharp on the tongue and charming, attentive and caring (relationship with his sister). According to Austin Margaret S. Sullivan, a researcher of creativity, this character is copied from the famous English writer Sydney Smith .
  • John Thorpe - Isabella's brother; an arrogant and extremely boastful young man. Unpleasant Katherine. “Feels” sympathy for her.
  • Isabella Thorpe ( English Isabella Thorpe ) - John's sister, girlfriend Katherine, lover of James. A hypocritical, windy and selfish young lady, busy searching for a rich husband. Upon arrival in Bath, he met Catherine Morland and made friends with her. In addition, when Miss Thorpe discovers that her friend has a brother James (the girl suspects a financially worse situation by mistake) she falls in love with him, leads him by the nose, and ultimately cheats with Frederick Tilney, after which the engagement is canceled.
  • General Tilney is the stern parent of Frederick, Henry, and Elinor Tilney. Retired General.
  • Eleanor Tilney is the sister of Henry. Lives in Nortenger Abbey. Companion Katherine and Henry. An obedient daughter, a warm friend , a sweet sister , is under the oppression of his father.
  • Frederick Tilney is the elder brother of Henry (the alleged heir to a family fortune), an army officer , a lover of flirting and beautiful women.
  • Mr. Allen is a pleasant man, somewhat reminiscent of Mr. Bennett, the father of the Bennett family in the novel Pride and Prejudice .
  • Mrs. Allen ( Eng. Mrs. Allen ) is a slightly idle woman, she loves to dress up fashionably and repeat their cues after others.
