Criticism

  • “The 20th century is ending. The peace comes, the education in its twilight of many secret, intimate spiritual worlds. Art is shrouded in mystery, acquires other-worldly vision. “The Owl of Minerva flies out at dusk,” Hegel used to say. Few artists manage to express this unique state of time, when the historical idea is exhausted and the metaphysical one flourishes, when the voracious caterpillar of civilization disappears and unexpectedly flushes out its immortal soul - culture. The work of Mikhail Molochnikov belongs to this unique phase of history, this sphere of insight, when metaphysical sensitivity to the last issues of life is sharpened. Hence his inner quests - Gnosticism and Hermeticism, magic and metaphysics, the organic rapprochement of neo-Pythagoreanism with Zen art and tantrism. Actually, the artist’s life itself cannot be separated from his work — it is no less mysterious than his art and is full of mysterious signs and mystical incidents — like a cast from his sacred masks and labyrinth structures. Contemplating the picture of the world, he seeks support in pre-Renaissance cultures, when the optical and distant perception of the world was not the supreme arbiter. “We are invisible creatures,” Mikhail Molochnikov repeats after Meterlink. Compositions of the artist keep in themselves the world behind the mirror, and it is enough to take a step to find oneself on the other side of reality, in the world of spiritual and mysterious essences, participating in the world of Borges and Nabokov. His tools include dreams, free associations, highlighting the fundamental layers of the subconscious, invading the most reserved depths of the psychic. A genuine universality of images arises, sometimes gaining universal proportions, generating images of a mandala. Hence the artist’s “festive insanity”, paradoxes, eccentricity causing, ecstatic with meditativeness, and rebellious mocking gaming freedom, which overthrows all norms and rules. Of course, this art system is stylistically connected with postmodernism, its “magic” line, rationalization of irrational forces. It is actualized by the situation when radical changes are foreseen, when sustainable lifestyles are disrupted and deep shifts occur, as is the case today in Russia. However, unlike many of his contemporaries, Mikhail Molochnikov is not confined to a situation closed by certain dates. In his works, a distant, in essence, time perspective. This is the poetics of the eternal and unchanging beginnings of life, passing, like catharsis, through chaos and illogicality, leading ultimately to deeply positive and constructive results. What information do Mikhail Molochnikov’s compositions report? Looking into the future, we, the contemporaries of the master, ask if our descendants can in the mirror of his books, masks, labyrinths, screens get an idea about the people of our time and our life? Obviously, it will be a very special information - about how people saw themselves from within, about their doubts and fears, about their presentiments and self-warnings, about their self-irony, and about their belief in sustainable values ”- Vitaly Patsyukov .
