Sports Biography

In Brazil, for his outstanding sniper abilities he received the nickname "Holy Hand" ( port. MΓ£o Santa ). According to unofficial data, in matches for clubs and the national team of Brazil scored 49 703 points for a career, which is an absolute world record [1] . It should be noted that Schmidt never played for the β€œbig” clubs, but was the undisputed leader and the best sniper in teams where all the other players played β€œfor him”.

In 1984, the 26-year-old Schmidt was drafted by the NBA New Jersey Nets club, but despite a number of offers to play for American clubs, Schmidt refused to go play in the United States, as in this case he lost his amateur status and could not play for the Brazilian national team (until 1989, NBA players, as professionals, could not play for their national teams).

One of Schmidt's most memorable matches was the final of the 1987 Pan American Games in Indianapolis , where the Brazilian national team met with the hosts of the competition - the US national team , which included David β€œAdmiral” Robinson , Danny Manning and several other future NBA players. By the middle of the match, the Americans had an advantage of 14 points - 68:54, but in the second half, the Brazilians, thanks to the excellent game of Schmidt, who scored 46 points per match, managed to snatch victory with a score of 120: 115.

He completed his sports career in May 2003 at the age of 45 years.

On September 8, 2013, Brown was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame. [2]

On August 5, 2016, Schmidt was one of 8 people who took out the Olympic flag at the Maracana Stadium during the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, and Russian commentator Dmitry Guberniev at that time cited this article without any reference to it.
