Born May 24, 1820 in Bunzlau (now Boleslawiec , Poland ).
In his youth he studied the natural sciences and in 1849, on the recommendation of Humboldt , was sent to Venezuela to study the natural riches of this country. After spending 10 years in Venezuela, Appun in 1860–1868 was in British Guiana and the neighboring regions of Brazil , where he explored the most important tributaries of the Amazon Rio Branco and Rio Negro and from Manaus rose up along the Amazon River to the border of Peru .
In 1868–1871, Appun was in Germany , where he was engaged in systematization and processing of materials collected by him in Brazil and Venezuela . During this time, he published a large number of articles on Indians and botanical research on the Guiana Highlands and the Amazon Jungle in various scientific journals and the book Under the Tropics: Travels in Venezuela, Orinoco, British Guiana and Amazon in 1849–1868 (Jena, 1871 ).
At the end of 1871, Appun returned to South America and died in July 1872 due to an accident in Guyana on the Mazaruni River.
In Venezuela, Appun is considered one of the greatest researchers in the country.
