Vocalist Nick Van Eede founded the band with Canadian guitarist Kevin Scott MacMichael in 1985. They made 2 demo records to sign a contract. Later, they were joined by bass player Colin Farley and drummer Martin Beadle (in 1986).
Broadcast's first album was released in 1986, thanks to producer Richard Branson from Virgin Records . A previously unknown group got into the charts of the USA, Canada and Norway - immediately to the top positions - with their debut song " (I Just) Died in Your Arms ". That was a good start.
The second album, The Scattering, was released in early 1989 and was also successful. The song β (Between a) Rock and a Hard Place β was featured in popularity ratings (CA 54, UK 66, US 77). Of course, not an outstanding result, but the voice of Nick Van Eede was liked by an adult audience of the North American continent, and the song β Everything But My Pride β peaked at the 4th line of the American hit parade, where it was in the list of 50 best for 22 weeks. In 1992, the band released their third album, Compus Mentus , but it did not receive due recognition as the first two albums.
After the band disbanded in 1993, MacMichael joined Robert Plant's band and participated in the recording of the album " Fate of Nations ". On the eve of 2002, MacMichael died of lung cancer while at home in Nova Scotia . Death overtook the musician at the age of 51.
Van Eede continued his career as a solo artist, producer, and songwriter. Colin Farley, the bass player, created the band and continued his career as a musician, performing in rock bars. Drummer Martin Beedle quits show business.
In 2006, Van Eede made an attempt to recreate the group with a new line-up. In February 2006, the album Grinning Souls was released at Hypertension record label. The updated group went on a tour of Germany, Britain, Denmark. In 2008, Cutting Crew signed a contract with the American studio Spectra Records.
