Biography

Born in the city of Kamensk-Shakhtinsky (Rostov Region) [2] [3] (according to other sources - in Kamensk, Poltava Region [4] ). Mother, Lidia Alexandrovna, graduated from medical school, lieutenant of the medical service, in August 1942 she volunteered for the front. In Stalingrad I met my future husband, father V.I. Strazhev. A father from the Vitebsk region, an artilleryman, participated in the Finnish campaign, liberated Western Belarus, started the war in Bialystok. Mother V.I. Strazheva began to give birth in an ambulance military train going to the front. His path ran through Kamensk. They called him Vasily in honor of his paternal grandfather Vasily Nikolayevich, a participant in the Russo-Japanese war, the sergeant major, and the gentleman of two St. George's crosses. Since 1954 V.I. Strazhev lived in Minsk. In 1966 he graduated from the Physics Department of the Belarusian State University with a degree in Theoretical Physics. During his studies, he was the secretary of the Komsomol committee of the course, then the faculty [2] . He entered the graduate school of the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR and in 1971 defended his thesis (the theme of the dissertation is “On the problem of dual symmetry in electrodynamics”). He worked in the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR (Institute of Physics, Department of Physical and Mathematical Sciences), then - in the Minsk Regional Committee and City Committee of the CPB, where he oversaw issues of science and education. In 1986 he defended his doctoral dissertation (topic - “Spin degrees of freedom and gauge symmetries”). In 1987, he was awarded the academic supervision of a professor. Published four monographs.

Since 1988 - at the Ministry of Education of the BSSR and the Republic of Belarus. From August 1994 to October 2001 - Minister of Education [2] of the Republic of Belarus (from 1994 to 1997 - Minister of Education and Science). He himself evaluated the results of his activities when he was a minister with the following words: “I believe that I managed to move the education system in the right direction” [2] . From 2001 to 2003, the rector of the Republican Institute of Higher School of BSU.

On November 17, 2003, instead of Alexander Kozulin , who turned out to be in the center of the scandal, [5] Strazhev was appointed the new rector of BSU. Chairman of the Committee for Cooperation in the Field of Education of the CIS Countries, Chairman of the Board of the Republican Society “Knowledge” [2] .

On October 31, 2008, Sergey Vladimirovich Ablameyko was appointed the new rector of BSU [6] . Among the reasons for the resignation of Strazhev was the achievement of the age limit for leadership positions [7] .

Member of the International Academy of Sciences of Higher Education , since October 1993 the head of its Belarusian Department. Participates in the work of the Public Council on Morality [8] .

In 1966 he got married. Wife since 1967, an English teacher at MSLU . Daughter by education a nurse. Grandchildren Michael (born in 1990-1991) and Daniel (born in 2004). [9] .
