History

The founding date of Varazze is called 1861, when it became part of the new state - the Kingdom of Italy . However, the first mention of human settlements in the area of modern Varazze belong already to the second millennium BC. And at the beginning of our era, shipbuilding began to develop here, which arose in the immediate vicinity of the place where the city’s railway station is now located. A thriving industry for the construction of naval ships made Varazze the subject of constant struggle to establish control over it from other territories. Beginning in the Middle Ages , Savona and Genoa constantly fought for the administration of the patrimony of Varazze. During its long history, Varazze managed to visit a part of the Genoese Republic and the Sardinian Kingdom . The status of the city received in 1864.

Architecture

The rich history has left in Varazze the beautiful creations of many masters.

Collegiata di Sant'Ambrogio was built in the Middle Ages. Its facade is made in the Baroque style, the bell tower - in the Romano-Gothic style. The interior has an altar with the image of St. Ambrose.

The ancient church of Sant Ambrogio is destroyed, but you can still recognize the Romanesque style. She is mentioned already in 1139.

The church of San Domenico was erected on the site of the previously existing monastery in 1419. Inside it is worth looking at the beautiful frescoes of the Siena school. And on the facade there is a cannonball abandoned by the French fleet.

Other sights include the Chapel of Bartholomew, the Church of St. Catherine, and others.

City

Part of Varazze is the Casanova settlement, which has many interesting architectural sights. On the coast near the historic center there is a large parking lot of yachts and boats. Through the city flows and flows into the sea Teiro . This type of reservoir in Italian is called torrente - something like a stream with a variable watercourse. In the hot time there is almost no water in it. There is an art school in the city, whose pupils carried out several interesting projects in the city. One of them - a gallery in a kind of underground passage, dedicated to women who are waiting for the return of their fathers, husbands and sons from the sea industry.
