Intel Chipset List

This article lists the chipsets released by Intel in chronological order and their characteristics. Due to the fact that Intel manufactures motherboards of its own production, there is some overlap (difference) in the standards used for the manufacture and labeling of chipsets manufactured "on the side" and motherboards that are manufactured under the Intel brand .

Early Chipsets

For i286 / i386 processors

For its microprocessors, Intel 80286 and Intel 80386 SX, Intel licensed POych chips from ZyMOS .

In the list of early Intel chipsets:

  • 82360SL is a chipset for the 80386SL and 80486SL mobile processors. Includes DMA controllers, PIC , COM and LPT ports and power management logic.

400 series for 80486, P5, and P6 processors

The next generation of chipsets can be conditionally combined into the 400th series, according to the internal and commercial naming of the series chipsets.

800 and 900 series for P6 and NetBurst processors

The following chipset development was marked by the introduction of “ hub architecture ” using the concept of north and south bridges. This series under 800 numbers was developed in 1999.

  • During the development of new generation processors according to the Tic-Tac strategy, their microarchitecture underwent drastic changes and received a new set of logic: a memory controller, an integrated video core and a PCI-Express x16 interface controller. In this regard, the manufacturer Intel decided to abandon the "northern" chipset MCH / GMCH (Graphics and Memory Controller Hub), and the chipsets, starting from the 5th series, began to represent some modification of the "southern" and instead of the traditional abbreviation ICH ( I / O Controller Hub ) are called PCH ( Platform Controller Hub ). The top-end category chipset X58 received only the PCI-Express x16 interface controller and became an intermediate IOH bridge.

  • From the 8th series of chipsets, the Intel manufacturer decided to deprive the PCI bus (not to be confused with PCI Express ) as obsolete, which forced the motherboard manufacturers (including Intel itself) to use additional PCI-PCI Express bridges, since the demand for the "obsolete" standard still there.
  • Also, starting from the 8th series of chipsets, the output of a fully rendered picture to a display device (display) is now carried out directly from the processor, with the exception of the VGA interface. The complete cessation of support for the FDI bus began with the 100 series chipsets, and, accordingly, the VGA interface is no longer supported as obsolete.

  • Like the chipsets for desktop computers, the mobile versions also took over the functions of the “south” and became the PCH bridge. According to Intel, reducing two chipsets to one significantly simplified the layout of the motherboard and reduced overall power consumption, which is very important for mobile computers and laptops to increase their autonomy.
