Tlingit writing

Tlingit script - the script of the Tlingit (Koloshen) language.

In the first half of the 19th century, the territory inhabited by the Tlingits fell into the zone of Russian influence. Orthodox missionaries translated a number of liturgical books into Tlingit language. In these books the Cyrillic alphabet was used, but there was no established alphabet. Initially (from the 1840s), the letters a and e were used, with the accent with superscript diacritics [1] . In later editions, the alphabet has changed.

Cyrillic books were published in Alaska until the early 1920s.

In the 1970s and 1980s, two versions of Latin script were developed for the Tlingit language in the USA and Canada , which are still used today.
