Biography

He was born on October 19, 1937 in Baku [2] .

Mirzabekov studied at the Institute of Fine Chemical Technology. M.V. Lomonosov . In his student years, he worked as a senior laboratory assistant at the Institute of Molecular Biology created by Academician V.A. Engelhardt (then the Institute of Radiation and Physico-Chemical Biology, USSR Academy of Sciences). All his further scientific life is inextricably linked with the IMB RAS. In 1973, he became the head of the newly organized laboratory for the molecular organization of chromosomes (now the laboratory of the structure and function of chromatin), and in 1984 he became director of the Institute of Molecular Biology, which in 1988 was named after the creator and first director V.A. Engelhardt.

The formation of A. D. Mirzabekov as a scientist included many months of internships in leading biological laboratories in the world - such as the Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge (UK) in 1971, the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena (USA) in 1975, and Harvard University (USA) in 1975 year.

On December 29, 1981, A. D. Mirzabekov was elected a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences in the Department of Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Chemistry of Physiologically Active Compounds. On December 23, 1987 he was elected a full member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (since 1991 - RAS ) in the Department of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Chemistry of Physiologically Active Compounds (molecular biology) [2] .

He was the chief editor of the journal "Molecular Biology".

A. D. Mirzabekov died on July 13, 2003 [2] . He was buried at the Troekurovsky cemetery in Moscow [3] .

Rewards

  • In 1969, A. D. Mirzabekov was awarded the USSR State Prize for participating in the work on establishing the primary structure of valine tRNA (the work was carried out under the guidance of Alexander Alexandrovich Baev ).
  • In 1981, his merits were awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor .
  • In 1999, with the wording “for his great contribution to the development of Russian science, the training of highly qualified personnel and in connection with the 275th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences” A. D. Mirzabekov was awarded the Order of Honor [4] .
  • For a series of works “Structural and functional studies of DNA and DNA complexes with proteins and low molecular weight ligands”, the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1999 awarded A. D. Mirzabekov the Gold Medal named after V. A. Engelhardt [2] .
  • In 2004 he was awarded the Order of the Legion of Honor - one of the highest awards of the French Republic ( posthumously ) [5] . The award was presented by the French Ambassador Jean Cadet to his widow - Natalia Vladimirovna.
