Cabral's expedition was carried by the storm to the coast of Brazil . Caminha wrote a famous letter about the discovery of this land to King Manuel dated May 1, 1500, in which he gave the first description of Brazil and advised the king to continue exploring this land.
This message, brought to Lisbon by Captain Lemouche , was declared a state secret because of the suspicion that the newly discovered lands might lie on the Spanish side of the Tordesillas map . For the first time, Camigny's letter became public only in 1817.
