Biography

The history of the Basic Channel project began in the early 1980s , when Moritz von Oswald in 1983 became the drummer of the famous German band of those times - Palais Schaumburg . Taking an active part in the work of the group, Moritz met with another member of the team Thomas Felmann , with whom they later collaborated on the 3MB project, releasing several classic techno tracks on the German label Tresor records . In 1992, records appeared in several specialized music stores in Berlin without any identification marks and catalog numbers. On records called Ploy and Lyot , electronic music was recorded, made in strict observance of all the traditions of Detroit techno. They were followed by six more records, on which the letter M appeared, and in the authors - someone Maurizio . Later it became known that the authorship of all seven records belongs to Moritz von Oswald.

Around the same time, Moritz met with Mark Ernestus, with whom they quickly found a common language and began to work actively in the studio. The result of their studio sessions was a series of records, united by a common name - Basic Channel. On the label, Mark and Moritz were published under various pseudonyms - Cyrus , Phylyps , Quadrant and Radiance . The first releases, as in the case of Maurizio, were sustained in the spirit of Detroit techno. But with each new release, the music became more blurry, as did the writing of the Basic Channel. Using exclusively analogue techniques when working on tracks, they left noises, crackles and clicks. Basic Channel records count [by whom? ] classics of the genre, and the label itself caused a lot of imitators. In 1995, the last record was released under the Basic Channel label, and the label ceased to exist, releasing in 1997 a collection of the most noteworthy tracks on the CD.

Along the way, working on the Basic Channel, Moritz and Mark launched the Main Street Records label , on which they planned to release a vocal house . All five records released on the label were released under the pseudonym Round with a serial number from Round One to Round Five . Only the first two releases were sustained in the original concept. From the third release, a Dominican was hiding under the stage name Tikiman, and the last three releases on Main Street Records tended to be dubbed . To publish their own compositions in the dub style, the partners created two more labels - Burial Mix and Rhythm & Sound Records , on which they recorded dub and reggae music under the pseudonym Rhythm & Sound and with the participation of Jamaican vocalists.

Moritz von Oswald and Ernestus also organized the Chain Reaction label, which published works by other musicians close to them.
