Ryponkicha

Ryponkicha ( jap. Ruiponkitya ) is one of the two islands of Ushishir (northern) of the middle group of the Great Ridge of the Kuril Islands . Administratively it is included in the North Kuril urban district of the Sakhalin region . Uninhabited.

Geography and Geology

In terms of area, it is about 3 times smaller than Yankich Island located 0.5 km to the south-west.

The island has the shape of a diamond stretched from northeast to southwest about 2 km long and about 1 km wide. The surface is gently sloping, smoothly rising from 60 m above sea level in the northeast part of the island to 121 m in the southwest.

History

In the Russian Empire

At the time of the hydrographic descriptions of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, together with the island of Yankich (and the Middle Island group), in the perception of local residents, it was taken into account as a single conventional island Fourteenth [1] [2] .

The Simodsk treatise of 1855 recognized the rights of the Russian Empire to the island.

As part of Japan

In 1875, according to the St. Petersburg Treaty, the island, like all the Kurils under Russian rule, was transferred to Japan in exchange for recognition of Russian rights to Sakhalin .

In the USSR / RSFSR-Russia

In 1945, according to the results of the Second World War, the island came under the jurisdiction of the USSR and was incorporated into the Sakhalin Region of the RSFSR . Since 1991, as part of Russia, as the successor country of the USSR [3] .

Animal World

There are a lot of birds on the island, there are such rare species as the red-breasted skate , the big ulit , the ginseng , and the red billow .
