Biography

The daughter of Louis-Francois Bertin , editor-in-chief of the famous newspaper Journal des débats (later the brother of Louise headed the newspaper).

Initially, she devoted herself to painting, then to music. She studied music with F.-J. Fetis . In 1827, she staged the small comic opera Le Loup garou (Werewolf) on the stage of the Feydeau Theater , which was favorably received by the public. Her other opera, Faust (1831), was also original. Bertin’s later work, the opera Esmeralda, whose libretto was composed by her friend Victor Hugo and was premiered by Hector Berlioz , was received rather coldly by the French public at the Big Opera (rumors were circulating that Berlioz composed at least part of the music) . In 1842, Bertin published a collection of poems entitled: “Les Glanes” ( Spikes ), which won an academic prize. [four]
