Content
Story
The place of action is the island of Rhodes . There are unrest against the power of the king-tyrant Ceres. But any manifestation of protest immediately punished.
To demonstrate his power, Serres ordered to build one of the seven wonders of the world - the Colossus of Rhodes . Architectural construction work carried out scientist Caret. The colossus of Rhodes was built as a lighthouse in the form of a sculpture of Helios and is designed to protect the island from possible attacks.
The discovery of the Colossus became for the inhabitants of Rhodes a grand celebration, witnessed by the ancient Greek commander Darius ( Rory Calhoun ) and his friends, who arrived on the island for a rest from military affairs. Uncle Darius Liziy does everything so that the pastime of the guests is accompanied by magnificent feasts, the shedding of wine, acquaintance with charming girls.
However, Darius becomes a casual witness, and then an accomplice in the preparation of a new uprising against Ceres. In addition, the Phoenicians, who serve the tyrant king, are preparing a coup d'Γ©tat. The Phoenician armada of ships is already sailing to the island, and the inhabitants of Rhodes will have to give them an unequal battle ...
Around the movie
The Colossus of Rhodes was shot entirely in French, however all the authors of the script were from Italy, and the director hardly knew French and used translators. The main investors of the film insisted on it.
In an interview, Sergio Leone always said that he had made Colossus of Rhodes only to pay for his honeymoon in Spain. The fact is that in 1960, Leone not only made his film debut, but also got married.
Technical Data
The film was shot on a standard 35 mm film with anamorphic optics using the SuperTalopskop system ( English SuperTotalscope ), which was a type of CinemaScope widescreen format . Rolled prints were printed by contact in the same format, designed for demonstration by an anamorphic projection lens with a screen aspect ratio of 2.35: 1 [1] .
