On May 7, 1945, together with General Alfred Jodl in Reims, he signed the Act on Unconditional Surrender of Germany. On May 8, 1945, at the request of the Soviet command, which did not recognize the surrender of May 7, together with Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel and Colonel General Hans-Jürgen Stumpf signed the Act on Unconditional Surrender of Germany in Potsdam. Then he returned to the headquarters of the Doenitz government at the Maritime College in Murvik .

Before the arrest of the government, he committed suicide.
