Itatiaia National Park

Itatiaia ( port. Parque Nacional do Itatiaia ) is the oldest national park in Brazil . The park was founded on June 14, 1937 on the basis of the Federal Decree of 1713, signed by President Jetulio Vargas . Currently, the park area is about 300 square meters. km The park is located in a mountainous area at the junction of the states of Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro , on its territory are some of the highest mountain peaks in Brazil. The name "Itatiaia" comes from the Tupi language , where it means "rocks with many points."

Itatiaia National Park is located in the mountain system of Serra da Mantiqueira , the highest point of the park, Agulhas Negras , is located at an altitude of 2,878 m above sea level.

The park is open for tourists and is divided into two territories, upper and lower. Entrance to the lower territory is located directly near the town of Itatiaia . On the lower territory there is an information center with a museum. The upper territory is not connected to the lower road, and is accessible through another entrance. From the upper territory begins the trail for climbing to Agulhas Negras.
