“I'll Cry Instead” (from the English - “I can only cry”) is a song by the English rock band The Beatles , written by John Lennon . The song was first released on A Hard Day's Night . “I'll Cry Instead” is based on elements of the country and western genre, which all members of the group loved very much, especially Ringo Starr [1] . “I'll Cry Instead” opened a whole direction in the work of The Beatles , in particular Lennon, creating a new image of John - a romantic hero sitting with his head on his palm and plunged into an ocean of mournful thoughts [2] . This pose of guilt and sadness left a characteristic imprint on the work of Lennon in the last decade of his life [2] .

About the song
“I'll Cry Instead” was recorded on June 1, 1964 . Lennon wrote it for an episode in which The Beatles quickly run away from a television studio and find themselves on a field where they rush along the grass. The composition consisted of two sections, A and B [3] , which could later be joined together so that it fit into the necessary scene of the film in time [4] . However, in the end, Richard Lester (the director of the film) preferred to use the more rhythmic composition “ Can't Buy Me Love ” with its cheerful lyrics in the episode [4] . Walter Shanson (film producer ) included “I'll Cry Instead” in the opening shots of the film when he reprinted it in 1981 [5] .
Song Structure
Cynthia Lennon figuratively calls the song John’s “cry of help”:
“The song reflects all the despair that John felt in those days. Having become the idol of millions, he lost the freedom and joy that he experienced in his youth ” [6] .
John Lennon later also said that the line “A chip on my shoulder that's bigger than my feet” accurately conveyed the feelings he had at that time [7] .
