Name Origin
According to a long legend, the name Tajura arose at a time when a beautiful princess named Ur ruled the city. Once she lost the crown, in the Arabic language Taj, and ordered her subjects to find her. People began to search for the crown with the shouts of Taj Ur, but never found it. Since then, the place has been called Tajura.
The most attractive for tourists in Tajur are the beautiful Mediterranean beaches.
Nuclear Research Center
Tajur is home to the Renewable Energy and Water Desalination Research Center (RRC), now built with the help of the Soviet Union, the Nuclear Research Center (NRC ) . Since 1983, a 10 megawatt nuclear reactor and a T-4M fusion unit ( tokamak ) have been operating at REWDRC.
The Nuclear Research Center in Tajur has all the conditions for research in all branches of fundamental and applied science with a priority on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, the use of renewable energy sources and desalination.
The center was founded in 1983 under the name Tajoura Nuclear Research Center (TNRC). The center’s task is to conduct fundamental and applied research in the field of peaceful uses of nuclear energy. When the center included the Water Desalination Treatment Research Center and the Solar Research Center, it was renamed the Renewable Energy and Water Desalination Research Center (REWDRC). Research is being carried out in the following areas of science:
- Peaceful use of nuclear technology
- Applied Renewable Energy Technologies
- Desalination technology
- The provision of scientific and technical services by the center’s specialists
