In evaluating contemporaries
Vyacheslav Shestakov recalled: [3]
It was a complex figure. On the one hand, the undoubted connoisseur of the Renaissance, the author of an excellent book on the Renaissance portrait, which in recent decades has withstood several publications. He studied the Renaissance historiography and gave very good lectures on this subject. On the other hand, Grashchenkov was intolerant of people, especially his students, who for a long time did not give access to protection. I remember that some of them just sobbed, talking about their relationship with their leader. Grashchenkov reminded me of the ancient Greek Krone, who devoured his children. Obviously, he was afraid of competition and did not let talented people capable of independence to the department.
