About the song
“Things We Said Today” is one of the three main tracks (along with “ And I Love Her ” and “ Can't Buy Me Love ” ) that Paul McCartney wrote for the film “ Hard Day Evening ”. Paul McCartney recalled the song he wrote:
“I wrote it for an acoustic guitar . This is a nostalgic ballad . She’s kind of about us in the future. About how we recall what we talked about today. ”
- [2]
According to the musician , McCartney wrote this song while traveling in the Caribbean aboard the Happy Days yacht in May 1964 . The song is inspired by the relationship of the musician with actress Jane Asher . At that time, they rarely managed to be together because of the heavy workload of both McCartney and Asher [2] .
McCartney especially liked the chord change from F major to B flat major - instead of the more obvious F that sounds in the part of the song “I Will Dream You Won't Be So Far From Me” ( English wishing you weren't so far away ) [3] . John Lennon underscores the AJ notes on the McCartney piano playing with sliding hits on the strings of an acoustic guitar with a triple beat. The tempo of the song smoothly moves from a romantic ballad to rock and returns to a major key in 32-beat form . The song “Things We Said Today” was included in the band’s first program during the 1964 American and Canadian tour. At concerts, the part of the second voice was performed by George Harrison [2] .
The group twice recorded a song for the BBC radio on July 14 and July 17, 1964 . The first version, which was broadcast on the program " Top Gear " , is included in the album Live at the BBC , released in 1994 [2] .
