Assassination of the President
The coup was organized with the goal of overthrowing the 4th president of Nigeria, Murtala Mohammed. General Murtala Mohammed , who came to power as a result of a bloodless coup in July 1975, changed the direction of Nigeria’s policy: he began to support the pro-Soviet People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola - the Labor Party , arrested a number of officials on the pretext of fighting corruption, and annulled the controversial 1973 census . Among certain circles, dissatisfaction with his policies grew. At the same time, it is believed that the conspiracy against Muhammad was inspired by the previous head of state, General Yakubu Govon , with whom Buka Bitch Dimka was related (his older brother, who had held the position of head of the Kvara State Police by this time, was married to Govon's sister).
On February 13, a Mercedes-Benz car , in which the president, his adjutant, driver, and orderly were, was fired on in a suburb of Lagos . All who were in it were killed.
The rebels seized the radio station Radio Nigeria. Lt. Col. Buka, Bitch Dimka, addressed the nation. He explained his rise to power by rampant corruption, extrajudicial arrests, and the government’s inability to effectively rule the country.
Soon, troops loyal to the government defeated the rebels. During the military tribunal, Lt. Col. Dimka accused Govon of plotting and stated that he had met with him in London for instructions; Great Britain did not satisfy Nigeria’s request for extradition of Govon, and further charges were dropped from him. Dimka and 38 of his most active supporters (both military and civilians) were shot. Lieutenant General Olusegun Obasanjo took power.
