Memoirs of Contemporaries

As for Panov, what will I tell you about him? What was my surprise at the sight of this young man so little sensitive to his fate was great? - It's true. But what to hear him saying what he said exceeded the measure of reason that nature gave me - and this is also true! It was about the goal that he and his associates had set for themselves, that is, to ask the emperor for a "constitution with arms in hand to put," as he said, "the boundaries of the power of the monarch"; he finds it very simple and very natural; when you think that such things appear after a year and a half of prison and before the prospect of hard labor - I think that we can say without hesitation that this young man has not yet recovered and has not repented ... [2] .
At the same time, I was very shy and easily lost with people I did not know well, and therefore every arrival of guests, when a large table was set up in the hall for dinner, turned to me a lot of torture. I was especially afraid of the Decembrist Panov, who quite often came to dinner and liked to make fun of me. He was a short, stout blond, with large bulging eyes, a blush on his cheeks, and a large pale blond mustache; at dinner he began to shoot at me balls of bread and, apparently admiring my embarrassment, would pester me with questions, usually all in the same way: “Why do you have my teeth? when did you stole them from me? give me them immediately back! ” The following times the same questions were repeated about the nose, eyes; I blushed to the ears, was ready to fall under the table and was extremely glad when, at the end of dinner, I could retire to my room [3] .
