General Description
These are small, fragile bats with long hind limbs and a tail. The body length is 3-5.5 cm, the mass of adults is 3-10 g. The tail is fully incorporated into the inter femoral membrane; its length is 5-6 cm. The muzzle is elongated, it has no nasal leaf, the nose is flat. The eyes are small. The ears are large, funnel-shaped, with a short triangular trestle; the inner edges of the ears go right to the eyes. The surface of the ears is covered with glandular papillae. The nostrils are oval- shaped, open near the edge of the lip. The lower lip is somewhat turned out, provided with a transverse cutaneous protuberance, which makes it appear that the funnels have two lower lips. Adult males on the forehead under the skin have a specific organ of cells resembling sensory structure; its function is unknown. Flying membranes are thin; wings long and narrow. The thumb of the forelimb is very short and is almost completely included in the flying membrane. The coat is long, thick and soft; The color is plain gray to yellowish to brown. Hair two-color, with dark tips. Teeth - 38.
Lifestyle
Lifestyle and breeding of funnels are practically not studied. They are inhabitants of tropical forests, both dry and deciduous ( Natalus stramineus ), and rain. The crater Mexican is found in the mountains up to a height of 2,400 m, although this genus generally prefers plains. They dwell in wet deep caves, mines , sometimes gathering several hundred individuals. Males and females meet together only during the breeding season. Do not fall into hibernation; Jamaican funnel spends the summer in austification (summer hibernation). They hunt at night, most active 2 hours after sunset. They feed on small insects, which are detected using echolocation signals with frequencies up to 170 kHz . The flight is slow, rather agile, similar to the flight of a butterfly. They breed once a year, in the dry season - in December - March; pregnant females of the most studied funnel Mexican were found from January to July. Pregnancy lasts 8-10 months; a newborn weighs up to 2 g - almost half the weight of the mother.
