“Favorite Heroes” (1940) - a film by D. Babichenko, dedicated to the twentieth anniversary of Soviet cinema

Born May 17, 1901 in the city of Zhytomyr . Graduated from the Academy of Plastic Arts in Kiev . He worked as a cartoonist in magazines and newspapers, first in Kiev, then in Moscow , as an artist in the art animation workshop at the Soyuzkino and Mezhrabpomfilm film factories. Further creative activity of Babichenko is associated with the Soyuzmultfilm movie studio . There he becomes one of the leading directors of the studio.

Working in different genres, Dmitry Babichenko became famous primarily as a director of fairy tale films. In the 1950s, he created vivid, unforgettable works that went down in the history of domestic animation. In 1956-1957, his films “ Million in a Bag ” and “ Hello to Friends! ” Were awarded prizes at the All-Union Film Festival . ". Cartoon “ Little Shego ” received a diploma at the International Film Festival in Venice . In the same place, in 1958, the cartoon “ First Violin ” received the prize.

Particularly fruitful was the collaboration of Babichenko with I. Ivanov-Vano . In 1959, they shot the cartoon “ The Adventures of Pinocchio ” based on the fairy tale by A. N. Tolstoy “The Golden Key ”, which entered the classics of Russian animation. The film was awarded the First Prize at the II All-Union Film Festival in Minsk (1960).

In 1969-1975, Dmitry Babichenko was the director and artistic director of the animation studio at the Creative Association “Screen” .

He died on July 30, 1991.

Interesting Facts

  • The XVII Festival of Archival Cinema "White Pillars" was held at the State Film Fund: the festival program included a large number of cartoons and film materials. There was a screening of two more color hand-drawn works by Soyuzmusfmart restored by Nikolai Mayorov and Vladimir Kotovsky. This time it was the studio’s first ever color painting “Sweet Cake” by D. N. Babichenko (1937) and the last studio “three-color” - “Winter's Tale” by I. P. Vano (1945). [one]
