Role in Art
Salvage of the Prado Museum
During the Spanish Civil War, Josep Renau was Director General of the Office of Fine Arts [1] . According to his stories, the paintings were saved by the personnel he led from possible destruction during the battles for Madrid with great caution: they were taken from Madrid to Valencia by truck, always only at night, on secondary, often country roads and at a speed not exceeding 15 kilometers per hour [1] .
It was Josep Renau, as the general director of the Prado Museum, who ordered Pablo Picasso a painting for the Spanish pavilion at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1937 , thus becoming the one who created the famous painting “ Guernica ” [1] .
