Lu Dalin had the highest degree of Jinshi , the title of professor at the Imperial High School. He studied first with Zhang Zai , then with Cheng Hao and Cheng Yi . He stood in opposition to the court of the Northern Song Dynasty, accusing him of selfishness and moral corruption. He proposed a system for selecting candidates for official positions, an alternative to the existing examination system: according to Lu Dalin, the examination tests should bear in mind some specific standards that the official’s personality must fulfill in fulfillment of specific functions.

Lu Dalin owns the earliest paleographic collection in China, “Kaogu Tu” (考古 圖), containing commentary descriptions of ancient ritual bronze vessels and texts on them.

The main philosophical works: “Li Ji Zhuan” (“Comments on“ Li Ji “”), “Ke Ji Ming” (“Inscriptions on Overcoming Yourself”), etc.
