History

The nameless before this square was received on August 22, 1991 after the failure of the putsch of the State Emergency Committee . The proposal for the name put forward by Yeltsin in one of his speeches.

Description

Free Russia Square is located on the arrow of Konyushkovskaya Street and Novy Arbat in front of the Novoarbatsky Bridge opposite the Moscow Government building (the former CMEA building). Krasnopresnenskaya embankment faces it from the north-west, and Smolenskaya from the south. In the north is the White House (Government House of the Russian Federation).

Monument to Stolypin

The order of the Moscow government on the installation of the monument was approved by the Mayor of Moscow S. Sobyanin June 2, 2011 [1] .

In July 2011, Prime Minister V.V. Putin invited members of the government to personally participate in finance in the construction of the monument:

This is everyone’s duty, I won’t force them, but I hope that each member of the government will contribute personal money for the construction of this monument.

It is known that one of his patches - more than 170 thousand rubles - was transferred to the monument, in particular, by the then Minister of Finance Alexei Kudrin . At the initiative of Putin, an account was also opened to collect donations for the construction of the monument.

On December 27, 2012, in the area of ​​Free Russia Square, a monument to Stolypin was erected in connection with the 150th anniversary of his birth [2] . Putin recalled, in particular, that members of the government also participated in fundraising for this monument: " Dmitry Anatolyevich and I also contributed."
