Dorzh Banzarov (c. 1822, Kutetuyevsky ulus , Selenga Steppe Duma, Trans-Baikal Region , now Dzhida District of Buryatia - 1855 , Irkutsk ) - the first Buryat scientist to receive a higher education of the western standard. Known for a number of important Mongolian works.

Biography
Came from the Buryat Cossacks . Father - a retired Pentecostal of the Ashibagat Cossack Regiment Banzar Borkhonov.
In 1833, having graduated from the Atamano-Nikolaevsky school, until September 1835 he studied at the Troitskosavsky Russian-Mongolian military school , after which he was sent to study at the Kazan Men's Gymnasium . January 25, 1836 enrolled in the first grade of the gymnasium. In June 1842 he graduated from the Kazan Gymnasium with a gold medal and the right to go to university.
In September 1842, he entered Kazan University at the Faculty of Philosophy, which had an eastern rank.
June 5, 1846 he graduated from Kazan University , where he studied the eastern languages: Mongolian , Kalmyk , Manchu , Sanskrit , Turkish . Banzarov also read fluently in German , English , French and Latin . He was a student of Osip Mikhailovich Kovalevsky - one of the founders of scientific Mongolian studies . He defended his thesis for the degree of candidate of Tatar-Mongolian literature.
In 1846, in the “ Scientific Notes of Kazan University ” he published the work “Black Faith, or Shamanism among the Mongols ”.
In the years 1847-1849 Banzarov conducted scientific research at the Asian Museum of St. Petersburg . He was elected a corresponding member of the Imperial Russian Archaeological Society . In 1848 he published the work "Payjie, or metal plaques with the commands of the Mongol khans."
In 1848-1850 he worked in Kazan . He studied document management at the office of the Kazan province .
In 1850 - 1855 he served in Irkutsk as an official on special assignments under the Governor-General of Eastern Siberia Nikolai Nikolayevich Muravyov-Amursky . For affairs of the department he lived in Kyakhta and Chita . In Verkhneudinsk, he worked on investigative matters. During this period, Banzarov published the work “Explanation of the Mongolian inscription on the monument to Prince Isunke, the nephew of Genghis Khan ” ( 1851 ), dedicated to the interpretation of the inscription on the “Genghis stone” .
In 1851 he was elected a corresponding member of the Siberian Department of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society . Fulfilled the instructions of the IRGO.
He died in 1855 .
Tribute to memory
In 1947, the Buryat Pedagogical Institute , now the Buryat State University , was named after Dorji Banzarov.
In 1957, a monument to the work of sculptors A. R. Vampilov and A. I. Timin was erected in front of the institute [1] .
Streets in the cities: Ulan-Ude , Irkutsk , Kyakhta and Kazan , the village of Kyren (the district center of the Tunkinsky district of the Republic of Buryatia ) are named after Dorzhi Banzarov.
In the year of the 170th anniversary, in 1992 , on the initiative of the chairman of the collective farm named after the 20th Party Congress VD Budaev, a memorial stone was erected not far from the family nest of Dorzhi Banzarov.
In December 2007, the administration of the Dzhidinsky district established the Dorzhi Banzarov Prize for especially gifted, talented students of the district who achieved high results in various fields of activity.
On January 24, 2008, by the decree of the Government of the Republic of Buryatia, the name of Dorzhi Banzarov was assigned to the Nizhne-Ichetuy secondary school of the Dzhidinsky district .
On June 11, 2010, as part of the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Dzhidinsky district, a monument to the sculptor Gennady Vasilyev was erected on the site of the family estate of the first Buryat scientist.
On December 27, 2018, by Order No. 1294 of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia, the Buryat State University was named after Dorzhi Banzarov. This decision was supported by the Government of the Republic of Buryatia , the rector and staff of the university, the scientific community and social activists.
