Title

The scientific name of the genus comes from lat. resedare (returning to the previous state) and is explained by the fact that the plant was previously used in herbal medicine : it was believed that with its help the body can be brought into a state of favorable equilibrium [4] . According to Max Fasmer , lat. resēdāre in this case means healing [5] .

The Russian name of the genus is “Reseda” - a transliteration of the scientific name.

Distribution

The range of the genus covers North Africa , Europe and part of Asia (before India ). The greatest species diversity is observed in the Mediterranean .

Biological Description

Representatives of the genus are annual, biennial and perennial herbaceous plants [3] .

Leaves are alternate, can be either pinnately dissected , or whole ; in some species, the lower leaves are whole, and the upper ones are pinnately dissected.

The flowers are small, stellate, collected in dense apical brushes . The color of the petals is white, yellow, greenish ( cultivars may have a different color - orange, red). Flowers of some species - for example, fragrant reseda - have an intense smell [3] [6] . Ovary upper .

The fruit is a box . Seeds are small, numerous.

Cultivation and use

The aromatic reseda is cultivated to obtain the essential oils used in perfumes . Earlier, even in Ancient Rome , this plant was used as a medicinal. Nowadays, fragrant and yellow reseda are used in folk medicine as a diaphoretic and diuretic and for heart diseases.

There is evidence of the use of the roots of the yellow Reseda ( Reseda luteola ) to obtain the yellow arziku dye in the first millennium BC, it is possible that the dye from the reseda was obtained earlier than the dyes of other widespread dyeing plants Wajda and Madder . Until the beginning of the twentieth century, parts of the plant were used to obtain dye used in the manufacture of dyes and in the textile industry , the use of this dye practically ceased after the appearance of cheap synthetic dyes. Currently used only as a dye for silk .

Despite the modest flowers, many species are widely cultivated as decorative [3] , possibly due to the published aroma.

Many species are good melliferous plants [4] .

Agricultural technology [3]

Plants can be grown both in partial shade and in the sun. It is desirable that the soil is alkaline , sufficiently fertile, well- drained .
