Gamescom (stylized as gamescom ) is an annual international exhibition of computer games . It was first held in 2009, from August 19 to 23. The exhibition is held annually in the German city of Cologne , at the Köln Messe exhibition center. The event is aimed at people related to computer games: consumers, fans, publishers, journalists and sales professionals, and the exhibition is used by many video game developers to demonstrate upcoming games and gaming equipment [2] .

Gamescom is the second largest gaming event in the world behind the Asia Game Show (in terms of exhibition space and number of visitors), with a total of 370,000 visitors and 1,037 exhibitors from 56 countries participating in the fair in 2018 and the largest gaming news exhibition of the year in Europe [3] [4] [5] .
History
The fair was born on the initiative of BIU ( German: Bundesverband Interaktive Unterhaltungssoftware ) - the German federal association of manufacturers of interactive entertainment software, in August 2008. The association was also responsible for cooperation in organizing the Games Convention exhibition, which was held in Leipzig from 2002 until 2008 inclusive, until a decision was made to transfer to Cologne .
gamescom is the successor to the former Games Convention . However, initially it was planned that gamescom would be a competitor to the Games Convention , and not its heir [6] .
Together with gamescom, another event was held - GDC Europe . The exhibition took place on August 17, 2009, two days before the start of gamescom, and ended on the day it began - August 19. GDC Europe is a gaming event, but unlike gamescom, it is aimed at developers of computer games [7] .
On January 29, 2009, a Leipziger Messe ( Leipzig Fair ) press release was published stating that the Games Convention was officially canceled. The 2009 game event, scheduled to take place on August 19-23, was also canceled [8] [9] .
As gamescom became the heir to the Games Convention (GC), GDC Europe became the heir to the Games Convention Developers Conference . The Games Convention Developers Conference was also held two days before the opening of the GC in Leipzig [10] .
On June 23, 2009, a press release was published according to which more than 300 companies and studios from 25 countries of the world applied for participation in gamescom. Among them are companies such as Activision Blizzard , Bigben Interactive, Capcom , dtp entertainment, Electronic Arts , Funcom , GOA, Hama, Koch Media, Konami , Microsoft , Namco Bandai , NCSoft , Nintendo , Rondomedia, Sega , Sony , Square Enix , Take -Two , Tivola, Ubisoft, and Warner Bros. [11] [12] .
Since 2018, the exhibition has been organized by the German association of the gaming industry Game ( German: Game - Verband der deutschen Games-Branche ); previously organized by Bundesverband Interaktive Unterhaltungssoftware (BIU), the German association of manufacturers of interactive entertainment software [13] .

GDC Europe 2009
GDC Europe ( English Game Developers Conference Europe - Russian. European Conference of Game Developers ) is an international event, a conference dedicated to the development of computer games . For the first time, GDC Europe was held in 2009, immediately becoming the largest pan-European event for game developers in 2009. GDC Europe was held in Cologne with gamescom at the Cologne Trade Fair in the Cologne Congress East Center. The conference began on Monday, August 17, 2009 and ended on Wednesday, August 19. GDC Europe 2009 was the largest event for game developers in Europe. She was visited by about 1,500 game professionals, more than 250 members of the press and more than 40 participants and sponsors [14] .
Significant Announcements
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has announced the PlayStation 3 Slim - a smaller and lighter version of the PlayStation 3 console, which will be released September 1, 2009. Firmware 3.0 was also announced, which adds new features to the PlayStation Network . It became known that the European Video Store will be launched in November. The PSP handheld console will receive smaller games (up to 100 MB) in the form of 'minis', as well as comics, which will be available in December. Those who register their PSP Go between October 1-10 will receive a free digital copy of Gran Turismo (PSP) .
Microsoft Game Studios has announced the game " Fable III ", which is due out in 2010. Also, the launch of Fable II is set for release in the Xbox Live Marketplace in five episodes, the first of which will be free to download.
Press Coverage
Most of the events and press conferences were not broadcast via streaming multimedia , however Electronic Arts broadcast its conference on EA.com [15] . Sony Computer Entertainment Europe also provided its press conference on the PlayStation Home online service shortly after it ended [16] . They also made videos available on the PlayStation Store . Major gaming sites such as IGN.com and Kotaku.com provided their live blogs.
Results and Results
Gamescom 2009 has become the largest gaming event in the world: it was visited by 245,000 people, more than 4,000 journalists. The exhibition was visited by 458 gaming companies from 31 countries. The total area of the exhibition halls was 120,000 square meters. According to a sociological survey conducted after the event, 95% of visitors emphasized the high quality of the exhibition, 92% rated their attendance at the exhibition as successful, 90% declared their intention to visit gamescom 2010. Some companies have already confirmed their participation in gamescom 2010 [17] .

For the first time during the exhibition, a specialist from Russia, Igor Boyko, editor-in-chief of the game world navigator magazine [23], was invited to the Gamescom jury.
