In 1797, after the completion of the Italian campaign , Napoleon Bonaparte transformed the occupied territories of the Genoese Republic into a protectorate of republican France called the Ligurian Republic.

The sovereign of the Ligurian Republic was the totality of its citizens. The legislative body was the Legislative Corps , consisting of two councils - the Council of Signors and the Council of the Sixty . The executive body was a five-member Directory .

In 1805, the republic was annexed to the French Empire as a department . In addition to the modern Liguria region, the territory of the republic included the island of Capraia Isola (today - in Tuscany ) and part of modern Piedmont . The population of the Ligurian Republic was about 600 thousand inhabitants, of which about 90 thousand in Genoa itself.

After the fall of Napoleon, the Ligurian Republic was restored and existed from April 28 to July 28, 1814 (after the Hundred Days ), after which it became part of the Kingdom of Sardin , to which it was officially annexed on January 3, 1815.

Throughout its existence, the Ligurian Republic has officially used the symbols of the Genoese Republic.
