Initially, the script for the film was written by John Spates, but since his story involved a large budget ($ 250 million) and the development of the concept of “Aliens”, and the studio did not dare to allocate such money to a film with an R rating, then Ridley Scott decided to move away from the theme of “Aliens” , and soon he handed over the script to Damon Lindelof , the screenwriter “ Lost ”, who radically rewrote the script for a more modest budget (including removing several large-scale scenes directly from Aliens in Spates’s version) and added religious motives to it [2] . The scenery was created with the direct participation of H. R. Giger - the artist and author of the very appearance of the very first “Alien” [3] .
The original soundtrack “Judge and Jury” for the trailers and teasers of the film was recorded by the American orchestral music group Audiomachine , composer Max Richter . Filming began in March 2011 in Toronto [4] , and later Scott moved the group to London [5] . Other locations are Morocco [6] , Scotland [7] and Iceland [8] . The film premiered in France , Belgium , Switzerland and [9] [10] Russia took place on May 30, 2012 . In Britain, the premiere took place on June 1, in the USA - on June 8, in Germany - on August 9.
Story
At the beginning of the film on a certain planet [~ 1], one of the representatives of the alien race of the Creators ( Space Jockeys , Eng. Engineers - engineers, designers), standing at the top of the waterfall , drinks some dark liquid that dissolves his body down to the DNA molecules. Before finally dying, ritually sacrificing himself [11] , the Creator falls into the water , where his molecules recreate a new DNA and form the first living cells , thereby giving rise to a new life on the planet [12] .
In 2089, archaeologists Elizabeth Shaw [~ 2] and Charlie Holloway, exploring the Scottish island of Skye , find cave paintings over 35 thousand years old in the cave. The pictograms depict people worshiping tall human-like creatures pointing to the stars.
Four years later, on December 21, 2093, the research vessel Prometheus , after a two-year flight, on board of which are in anabiosis along with all Shaw and Holloway, flies to LV-223 - one of the natural satellites of the planet-gas giant in the system Zeta Grid (ζ2 Grid) [13] . David, an android on the watch, studies ancient languages, teaches Schleicher's fable [~ 3] , plays basketball, looks at dreams of people in suspended animation, and watches his favorite film “ Lawrence of Arabia ”. When the whole team wakes up, the expedition leader, Marydith Vickers, shows a holographic record on which the late head of Weyland Industries, Peter Weiland, reveals the purpose of the expedition: very similar images were found all over the globe that indicated that aliens were visited by ancient earthly civilizations and Weiland decided to send a space expedition to meet the ancient ancestors. Speaking further, Shaw and Holloway show that all these ancient images depicted the same constellation, which they identified as Zetu Grid. Prometheus sits on LV-223, where the crew discovers a number of ancient structures of artificial origin. A group of scientists is sent to one of them and discovers various technical devices and remains of human-like creatures inside. Geologist Fayfield launches automatic drones scanners to create a three-dimensional map of the premises. Android David finds and activates a hologram, which shows how enormous (in different frames growth is estimated at about 3-4 m), straightforward aliens of human proportions flee from some kind of danger. Fayfild and biologist Milburn are afraid to meet what caused the aliens to flee and go back to Prometheus. The remaining scientists find the body of an alien with a head cut off due to an accident. Field analysis shows that the creature died about 2,000 years ago. In the course of further investigation of the structure, scientists find a room with a multitude of cylindrical objects. David states that they emit a black liquid of organic origin.
Suddenly, a dust storm begins, and scientists immediately return to Prometheus, taking with them the head of an alien. In the confusion, no one pays attention to the fact that David takes one of the cylinder-vessels with him in his bag. On board, it turns out that Fayfield and Milburn got lost and stayed in the ancient structure, and they decide to pick them up after the storm has passed (because of the storm it is impossible to contact them). Shaw and Medic Ford begin to explore the remains of the newcomer: it turns out that this is not a skull , but a helmet that hides a well-preserved head, very similar to a human one. In appearance this is the representative of the Creators race shown at the beginning of the film. In addition, the alien's DNA is also analogous to human (in the frame is visible the display of the instruments - "DNA match", literally - "DNA match"). After examining the head, scientists discover that the skin of the Creator is covered with growths that look like new cells in the process of transformation. To find out exactly what it is, they give an electromagnetic charge to the nervous system of the head to revive it, after which unknown biological processes begin to occur in the head and it explodes.
David secretly opens a vessel with a black liquid taken by him and adds a drop of it to an alcoholic drink of the already drunk, clearly disappointed Holloway, having received from him in the course of an emotional dialogue an indirect consent to self-sacrifice for the sake of scientific achievements. Holloway then goes to Shaw. They talk about the Creators, argue about the futility of their discovery, and then have sex . In parallel, Fayfield and Milburn find a corridor with a multitude of mummified bodies of the Creators, who also died from the fact that their skulls exploded too. The mobile scanners launched earlier by Fayfield gradually reproduce the structure of the structure, part of which turns out to be an alien spacecraft. Studying his holographic copy, Captain Janek remarks that in the vicinity of the scientists remaining in the building, there are signals showing the presence of some form of organic life. He manages to contact Fayfildom and Milburn, who then go in the opposite direction and enter the hall with containers, vessels. A liquid has already flowed out of them, into which local worms got, quickly mutated into snake-like creatures. One of them attacks Milburn and breaks his arm. Trying to free a colleague, Fafild cuts off the snake-like creature's head, after which acid begins to splash out of the wound. She falls on Fayfield’s helmet and eats it, it falls into a puddle of dark liquid, and a new head grows at the creature’s cut-off point, and it enters Milburn’s body. The next morning, Holloway, looking in the mirror, notices the symptoms of an “unknown infection” - the result of a mutation of symbiotic organisms (or parasites ).
When the storm subsides, the team goes in search of missing colleagues. David is separated from the group and finds an impressive, compact supply of cylinders and a spacecraft control point for aliens, where, using holograms, he finds out that the aliens were going to go to Earth , presumably with the destructive purpose of delivering and activating those containers. He also discovers cryocapsules, in one of which the living Creator is in a state of suspended animation. Meanwhile, the team finds Milburne's corpse. Suddenly, Holloway gets worse and the crew decides to return to the ship, but Vickers, believing that Holloway is dangerous to others, prohibits him from boarding. Holloway himself, realizing that he is a threat to the others, provokes Vickers to burn him from a flamethrower .
Maddened by grief, Shaw is brought to the medical bay, where David, after examining her, reports that she is pregnant with Holloway and is in her third month of pregnancy, although Shaw is infertile. David wants to freeze Shaw to deliver her and the fetus to study on Earth, but Shaw feels that something is wrong and breaks through to the automatic surgical module that is located in the Vickers rescue module. She programs on the device operation to extract a foreign body. The fruit is a fully formed squid-like creature that remains in the clamps of the surgical module. Shaw then finds on the ship Peter Weiland, who has not really died, although he is very old, and who was secretly carried in a capsule. Obsessed with the fear of death, he yearns for a meeting with the Creators, hoping that they will cure him and grant immortality . Meanwhile, an infected Fayfild attacks the ship and, before being destroyed, kills several crew members. When talking to Shaw, Captain Janek suggests that there was a military base of the Creators on this planet, where they developed some kind of biological weapon over which they lost control.
Weiland, his people, David and Shaw are sent to an alien ship, where David tells us that the Creators flew to Earth with their deadly cargo, but the catastrophe prevented them. People awaken the remaining Creator from the cryos. For some time, the giant with visible curiosity oversees the development of the dispute between Shaw and Weiland, perhaps not understanding the modern version of the language of earthmen (the question remains open about the observation of people by the Creators during the last 2 millennia). Then David tries to communicate with him in Proto-Indo-European language [~ 4] [14] [15] . The humanoid suddenly turns to action, demonstrating a sharply hostile attitude and unwillingness to come into contact with the "brothers in mind." He tears off the head of the android and kills Wayland and his people. The show manages to escape. The alien does not pursue her, neglecting her ability to somehow influence the situation, hastily launches the ship to fly to Earth and resume some of its tasks.
At this time, Shaw gets out of the alien ship and warns the crew of Prometheus about the hostility of the alien and the possible consequences of his flight to Earth. Shaw herself at this point has no doubt that the Creators decided to "destroy the Earth" (although black liquid interacts only with organic matter, which does not threaten the integrity of the planet). Vickers orders captain Janeku, pilots Revel and Chansu to fly to Earth, but they decide to sacrifice themselves: launching an ion engine , go to a ram taking off an alien ship that is many times larger than Prometheus. Before the collision, the captain discards the emergency module Vickers, and the Vickers herself has time to leave Prometheus in the emergency capsule. As a result of the collision, “Prometheus” collapses completely, and the alien ship loses control and falls in the launch area, killing Vickers.
The show is saved and gets to the rescue module, where it discovers that the fruit extracted from it has grown to gigantic size during this time and freed itself from the seizure. Then she is contacted by a still functioning, immobilized David and warns of danger - the survivor of the crash Creator goes to her. The woman manages to substitute him under the tentacles of the creature extracted from her. The humanoid loses the fight to the more massive creature. After this, David reports that there are more Creators ships on the planet, and if Shaw recovers him, he will help her fly to Earth. But Shaw decides to fly to the home of the Creators in order to find out why they created humanity and why they later decided to destroy it [~ 5] .
The last shots of the film show how a creature similar to Alien crawls out of the Creator’s chest, defeated and impregnated by a squid-like monster [~ 6] .

Creation History
In September 2011, it was announced that Ridley Scott was appointed director of the prequel to “Alien” [16] .
Ridley Scott himself in an interview in 2002 said that he would like to make a film that reveals the secret of the origin of the Aliens . The audience could expect the history of the crew of the alien ship that was found by the Nostromo truck carrier ( see the story of the movie “Alien” of 1979 ). However, at the film festival held in London at the end of October 2009, Scott pointed to the larger scale of the script:
We will have a completely new story. We have already drawn a diagram, the script is now being written. The prequel action will take place some time ago. It is difficult to determine the year of the "Alien" action, but, for example, if we take that then it was the end of this century, then our story will begin to develop thirty years before those events. |
The source SkyNews reports that the layout of the “pilot” from the first film was recreated on the set, and part of the action will unfold on a spacecraft controlled by a “giant biomechanical head” [17] .
On October 1, 2010, on ScriptFlags, information appeared that Ridley Scott required $ 250 million to film the film, and the management of 20th Century Fox plans to invest a much smaller amount in the project. In addition, the director wanted to make a film with a rating of “R” (he had earlier made promises to make “hard and gloomy” prequels), and the management insisted on a PG-13 rating, suggesting that the film would be available to more viewers [ 18] [19] [20] . The film was filmed in 3D.
Initially, Ridley Scott planned to shoot a dilogy, and also to attract actor Leonardo DiCaprio to the shooting, because of whom he even made a postponement in the shooting, but ultimately refused both ideas [21] .
On January 14, 2011, Scott announced that in the course of working on the script, the prequel to “Alien” had developed into an independent story, but still contains certain easily recognizable motifs and elements of past films. According to him, the film was shot in order to at least partially show the history of the “pilot” [22] . Appeared in early January 2011, rumors that the film was not related to the Aliens universe at all were later refuted [17] , including the co-star Michael Fassbender [23] .
Recruitment
The contenders for the lead female role - the archaeologist [24] Elizabeth Shaw, were Anne Hathaway , Natalie Portman , Gemma Arterton , Carey Mulligan , Abbie Cornish and Numi Rapas [25] [26] [27] . The choice was made in favor of the latter [28] [29] . Rapas rejected the comparison of his character with Ellen Ripley from the original " Alien " [30] . She described Elizabeth Shaw as a deeply religious Christian who has to become a warrior as a result of the events in the film [31] . In order to fully get used to the role, the actress mentally developed the full story of the character [32] . To achieve a plausible English accent, Rapas worked with a teacher [33] . She resorted to the services of a make-up artist for an additional image of blood and sweat to more accurately depict the heroine of the film [34] . The actress said that the shooting with her participation lasted six months and was so intense that she sometimes felt severe pain from overstrain, but it was still very surprising [35] .
Guy Pierce was played by Peter Weiland, a multi-billionaire founder and CEO of Weyland Corp [42] [47] . Film writer Damon Lindelof described him as having a huge ego and a complex of God [42] . Guy Pearce claimed that he would have a brief appearance in the film, saying “I’m only there for a minute”. [48]
Idris Elba played Janek, captain of "Prometheus" [49] . He described his character as “a loader and a sailor with a military background” [50] [39] . He noted that, being the captain, Janek was responsible for the crew [39] and that he was “a realistic and pragmatic character, he must intervene in the film with a great idea to say“ Wait ... why are we doing this? ” [50] Almost all scenes with the Elbe are filmed inside the ship's scenery [50] .
Logan Marshall-Green played the role of Charlie Holloway - Shaw's colleague and her lover [51] [52] . He described his character as “a scientist from the World Extreme Games, ” explaining that he likes to play a character with a “do it first and then watch” philosophy. The actor said that Holloway “does not want to meet with its creator, he wants to stand next to him. He is ready to step onto the very edge to do this. ” [52] Describing the motivation of his character, Marshall Green says that “he goes to the extreme in everything that he does, sometimes better, sometimes worse [Prometheus Crew”]. I think it is the excitement of the search that makes him ” [39] . He contrasts Holloway Shaw - “She is a believer. I'm a scientist. I'm a skeptic. I am an atheist ” [53] .
Rafe Spall played by the botanist Milburn. The actor tried his hand at another role, but the director decided that Spall should play Milburne [54] [55] . On samples, the actor said: ““ Alien ”is one of the best films ever made, and it's a real thrill to be in a spacesuit from Alien, with Ridley Scott, who comes and talks with you. This is incredible. That is why I would like to be an actor, to be in a spacesuit with the “Alien” ” [56] .
Sean Harris played the role of Fayfield, a geologist who became mentally unstable after many missions [57] . Harris describes his character as “the one who feels when something happens. He is a guy from your group who says “Do not go to this tunnel! We should not do it! "" [58] . The hero has a bright red mohawk, this hairstyle developed by Harris and Scott based on Scott's sketch of a “man with a severe haircut” [58] .
The role of the last surviving Creator was played by Welsh actor Ian White [59] . He is a longtime fan of Aliens and Predators and has already participated in making films about them - he played the Scar Predator in Alien vs. Predator and the Wolf Predator in Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem [60] .
Other actors who took part in the film include Iman Elliot and Benedict Wong , who played the pilots of Chance and Ravel [61] [62] , Patrick Wilson , who played the occasional role of Shaw's father in the recollection of the heroine [63] .
Budget
Filming Ridley Scott began with a budget of $ 100 million. [64] The more accurate budget of the film at the time of the shooting was $ 130 million.
MPAA Rating
The film officially received a rating of " R " [65] [66] .
Novelization
The novelization of the film was made by Joey Spice and Damon Lindelof and was released on August 1, 2012, but it was published only in Japan and in Japanese [67] .
Rental Rental
Cash fees
The film collected in North America $ 126,477,084, in the rest of the world - $ 276,877,385. Total film fees were $ 403,354,469 [1] .
Critical Reaction
As of December 29, 2012, the ranking of the Rotten Tomatoes website shows that, based on the feedback from 263 critics, the film received a positive response from 73% of critics. Average rating of 6.9 / 10. [68] The Metacritic website rated the film at 65 points out of 100 based on 42 reviews. [69]
The fans of the Alien saga were not so supportive of the film. In particular, “Prometheus” was criticized for the ridiculous behavior of the characters (which are positioned as a prepared scientific task force), the lack of elaborate alien monsters, and simply plot absurdities, such as the Company's motives, which changed for the film several times. Screenwriter Damon Lindelof, who first defended his offspring, and argued that all inconsistencies are part of his idea to make the film mysterious, eventually admitted that he had let the fans down. He explained all the flaws in the script with extremely tight deadlines allocated to him for its processing [70] .
Editions
The release of the film on DVD and Blu-ray in the United States was launched on October 9, 2012 [71] , in Russia - October 4, 2012 [72] [73] . There are 36 minutes of remote and alternative scenes on the Blu-ray disc, as well as audio commentary by director and producer Ridley Scott, audio commentary by screenwriter John Speights and screenwriter / executive producer Damon Lindelof, “Peter Weyland’s files” [72] . A bonus Blu-ray disc with more than three hours of additional material on film making will be included in the collector's edition with a 3D version of the film [74] .
Awards
- BAFTA 2013 - nomination: best visual effects;
- Oscar - nomination: the best visual effects.
- Saturn 2013 - two nominations: best male supporting role and best science fiction film .
Sequel
Initially, the film was called “Alien: Lost Paradise” and was planned as a direct sequel to “Prometheus” . Later, his name was replaced by “ Alien: Testament ” [75] , and the concept of direct continuation was slightly redone - although the film takes place after “Prometheus” and it continues its history, but the film itself is already concentrated on other characters. The premiere date was scheduled for March 4, 2016, but was later rescheduled to May 30, 2017 [76] . As a result, the world premiere of the film took place on May 4, 2017, and in Russia the film was released on May 18, 2017. The script was written by Michael Green ( " Green Lantern " ), actor Michael Fassbender returned to the role of android David. Filming began in the spring of 2016 after Ridley Scott finished work on the painting “ Exodus: Kings and Gods ” [77] .
