History
Old University
The University of Cologne was founded on May 21, 1388 and became the fourth highest school of the Holy Roman Empire after Charles University in Prague, Vienna and Heidelberg universities . The foundation certificate was signed by Urban VI in Perugia . Already in January 1389, lectures began for the first seven hundred students.
On April 28, 1798, the University of Cologne was closed after the rector Ferdinand Franz Walraf and all the professors refused to take the oath to the First French Republic , explaining that by the need to preserve the independence of the university. However, in 1799, Walraf swore allegiance to France and was appointed teacher of the so-called "Central School", the successor of the closed university. In this post, he managed to hide from the French and thus save many works of art. Most of his collection is in the Wallraf-Richartz Museum [2] .
New University
Throughout the XIX century, attempts to restore a closed university were unsuccessful. On May 29, 1919, the burgomaster of Cologne, Konrad Adenauer, signed a decree on the opening of a new university. In October 1929, construction began on the main building on Albert the Great Square.
