Catheder socialism

Kateder-socialism (German Kathedersozialismus , from German Katheder - department) is a trend in the history of economic thought. It arose among conservative economists as a response to the spread of the social democratic movement and Marxism.

The term was proposed by the German economist Heinrich Bernhard Oppenheim (1819-1880). Most representatives of catheter-socialism occupied the professorial departments of universities. Formally, the followers of catheter-socialism were united in the German " Union of Social Policy " (1872-1938) and the "Society of Economic and Social Science" (1947-1948). The largest representatives of catheter-socialism include L. Brentano , A. Wagner (left Soyue in 1877), G. von Schmoller , V. Sombart , A. Scheffle (never belonged to the Union). A common feature of all these scientists was the recognition of the need for state intervention in the economy in the form of a kind of “ state socialism ” (essentially state capitalism ). There was disagreement among the leaders of catheter-socialism regarding freedom of trade - some preached free trade ; others are protectionism .
