Dzhelam [1] ( Kashm . Vyeth , Hindi झेलम , V.-Panj. ਜੇਹਲਮ ( gurmukhi ), Urdu جہلم ( shahmukhi )) - a river in India and Pakistan , a tributary of the Chinaba ( Indus basin).

The average water flow rate is 895 m³ / s, during monsoons it increases to 20,000 m³ / s. Navigable, is of great importance for agriculture, as it feeds several large irrigation canals . In addition to the city of the same name , the river flows through Srinagar , Bhera and Khushab .
According to one version, Jhelam is Vitasta ( Skt. वितस्ता ), one of the rivers of Semirechye . Under the Hellenized name of Gidasp , the river valley is known as the arena of the last major battle of Alexander the Great .
