Biography
He came from the Livonian noble family, part of which at the beginning of the 18th century moved to Sweden , a distant relative of the infantry general P.K. Essen . Born on September 26, 1755 in the castle of Kavlos near Tidaholm . Educated at Uppsala and Gottingen universities.
In 1777, he joined the Swedish army and accompanied King Gustav III on his trip to Italy , France and Germany . As a royal adjutant, he took part in the war against Russia and was promoted to colonel and was appointed commander of the Gothenburg guard and militia.
On March 16, 1792, Essen was next to the king when the latter was mortally wounded at a ball in Stockholm .
In 1795, Essen accompanied the Duke of Sodermanland (later King Charles XIII ) and the young King Gustav IV Adolf to St. Petersburg , on his return until 1797 he served as governor of Stockholm .
In 1800 he was appointed Governor General of the Swedish possessions in Pomerania .
In the campaign of 1807, Stralsund defended against the French for two months and, after a series of fights, entered into a truce with Marshal Brun .
By the dismissal of Gustav IV, Adolf Essen took a seat on the Council of State, and then was sent as an envoy to Paris , where in January 1810 he signed peace between France and Sweden . On April 29 of that year, Essen was elevated to count dignity. In 1810 he was promoted to marshal of Sweden and in 1811 to field marshal .
In 1813, Essen led the Swedish expeditionary force and occupied Norway ; after the unification of countries from 1814 to 1816 he held the position of governor of Norway ( stattholder ); Then he was appointed Chancellor of the University of Christiania and Field Marshal of the Norwegian forces.
In 1817, Essen was appointed commander in Skane, and this ended his active political activity. Essen died on June 28, 1824 in Uddevalla .
