The team was founded by brothers Fermin ( guitar and vocals ) and Inigo ( bass and vocals) Mugurus and drummer Mattin (soon replaced by Track Armendaris ) under the influence of the punk band The Clash . The name comes from the nickname of Corte, which was worn by an ETA activist killed by the civil guard , Manuel Maria Garmendia Subiarrain. The nickname comes from the name of the native village of Corta - Cortatu.
Kortatu songs were performed first in Spanish and Basque, and then almost exclusively in Basque. Most of the songs are devoted to acute socio-political issues, the main of which is the national independence of the Basque Country.
By the end of the 1980s, the group began to gradually depart from the genre canons, and in 1988 completely ceased to exist. Later, the Mugurus brothers and guitarist Kaki Arkaraso , who played Kortatu for the past year, created the band Negu Gorriak .
