Tulga pursued, as it seems, a rather soft policy, which may be explained by his certain naivety and weakness of character. Left a positive impression on posterity; the author of the Mosarab chronicle , written a hundred years later, calls him "a good and noble husband . " [one]
However, despite his good nature, after two years of rule, in 642, a conspiracy arose against him. At the head of the rebels stood Hindasvint , who by that time was 79 years old. The Frankish chronicler Fredegar notes that the Gothic people, not controlled by a firm hand, became troubled, and at the meeting of many Gothic senators and other people, one of the magnates named Hindasvint was elected king of Spain. [2] The venue for this meeting was Pampale, which is identified with Pampliega ( Prov. Burgos ), although it is possible that it could be Pamplona . In any case, the uprising began from the borders of the Country of the Vascons , against which, apparently, Hindasvint was sent to fight. Apparently, relying on the army, Hindasvint and proclaimed himself king.
About the end of the Tulga reign, two conflicting traditions have survived. Which of them is more correct, it is not possible to find out due to the lack of reliable sources.
If you believe the monk Sigebert of Gembloux , a writer of the 11th century , the author of theological and historical works, it turns out that the rebel Hindasvint, having strengthened the support of other nobles, appeared in Toledo , where he captured Tulga (whom he calls Tolgan) and forced him to get a haircut as a monk , depriving thereby right to the throne [3] . Fregegar also speaks of accepting tonsure. [2] The further fate of Tulga is not known. [4]
However, Ildefons of Toledo gives a completely different view of the same events. The rebel Hindasvint received some support from the nobility, but, lacking the approval of the clergy, failed. Tulga managed to maintain the throne, and Hindasvint continued to remain as a rebel, until the death of the king due to illness did not allow the applicant to force himself to recognize all the nobility and clergy as a monarch.
Tulga ruled 2 years and 4 months. [5]
