Biography
Under Konstantin Monomakh, Mikhail served as logotype of the Stratiot treasury . He was promoted to the throne by a group of metropolitan officials led by Lev Paras . The dying Empress Theodora approved their choice. Michael became the emperor of Byzantium already in very old age [1] .
Having taken power on August 31, 1056 , Mikhail began to generously hand out ranks and awards. The warriors became aware of what was happening, and the most selective of them, on Easter days in 1057, arrived in the capital Constantinople , hoping to achieve the same or even great favors.
However, Emperor Michael treated them completely differently than they expected: first, he cursed them all, and then brought them to the middle of their leader, Isaac Comnenus , and Kevkamen, who followed him, and showered him with abuse lost Antioch . The comrades, who were waiting for favors, but were offended, tried to intercede for them, but Michael silenced them and denied everyone their favor.
This scene in general extremely stirred the souls of military leaders and inspired them with rebellious thoughts. Soon they conspired, and the crown was persuaded to give to Comnenus, who stood out among them not only by birth, but also by royal appearance.
It took quite a bit of time, and the conspirators at the head of a huge army, pulled from the eastern empire of the empire, approached the capital. Michael gathered an army against them in Western themes. In August, near Nikea, the imperial troops suffered a heavy defeat from the rebels.
Michael was forced to enter into negotiations with Isaac: he offered him an adoption and the title of Caesar. He initially agreed, but the general indignation of Michael spread to the capital itself. Part of the synclitics together with the patriarch proclaimed Isaac the emperor, and Michael was accused of all sorts of sins [2] . When the metropolitans came to Michael and tried to persuade him to renounce, after some hesitation, he threw off his purple shoes, accepted the schema and settled in a private house [1] .
