Biography

Theudigisel is the successor to Theudis , under whom he was the commander of the army. During the attack of the Frankish kings Hildebert I and Chlothar I on the possessions of Theudis, Teudigizel, having received a bribe from the Franks, traitorously allowed the enemies to escape through the Pyrenees gorges with huge booty, although he could easily destroy them ( 542 year ).

“The Goths, under the command of the military commander Theodigisle, blocked the passages to Spain and, to their own surprise, defeated the army of the Franks. In response to supplications and huge sums of money, the military leader gave the enemy units a passage for a period of one day and one night. The Franks, who did not have time to retreat in the allotted time, were ruthlessly destroyed by the ready swords ” [1] .

It is possible that, being the closest ally of Teudis, Teudigisel, becoming king, continued his policy towards the Spanish-Roman population and the Orthodox-Nicene church. This caused a sharp discontent of the Gothic nobility, which opposed him. Rumors began to spread about the king, accusing him of debauchery, violence, the desire to destroy many prominent figures of the Gothic nobility. It is not known how true these rumors were, but they justified the plot, in which the king was killed the next year during a feast (October 549 ).

“He publicly defiled the family ties of many tycoons and decided to kill them. However, he was outstripped by a group of conspirators from Seville . His throat was cut in the middle of a holiday, and from this he died ” [2] .

“Once, when he was feasting with his friends and having fun with all his heart, the lights suddenly went out, and he died, reclining at the table, from the sword of his enemies” [3] .

According to Isidore of Seville , this murder was the result of a conspiracy of "many powerful" in the immediate environment of the king. Jordan speaks of the "friends" who killed Teudigisel. [4] Here we are clearly talking about the expression of dissatisfaction with a fairly wide circle of Visigothic nobility. This murder opened a twenty-year period of political instability in the Visigoth kingdom . Gregory of Tours , who wrote in the second half of the 6th century , speaks of a “Gothic disease”, expressed in the killing by Goths of objectionable kings [3] [5] [6] .

Teudigisel rules 1 year, 6 months and 13 days [2] [7] [8] . There is an assumption about the identity of the Visigoth king Theudigisel and the son of the Ostrogothic king Theodahad Theudegiscle, but there is no real basis for such a statement.
