Biography
Bret Easton Ellis was born on March 7, 1964 in Los Angeles , California , USA . His parents - father Robert Martin Ellis, the developer, and mother Dale Ellis, a housewife - were divorced in 1982 shortly after their son went to college. Until the age of eighteen, he was often abused by his father, who had serious problems with alcohol. Robert Ellis will die in 1992, never reconciling with his son. Their uneasy relationship will be reflected in the work of Bret Easton Ellis - in particular, when creating the image of his most famous hero Patrick Bateman, the writer will build on his father’s figure [2] (however, in a later interview, Ellis will call this explanation a lie from unwillingness to admit that to a greater degree he wrote Bateman from himself [3] ). At different times, Ellis will give equally controversial answers to other issues of his biography - in particular, about his personal life: reporting in one of the interviews about the significant role in his life of Michael Kaplan, a friend and lover for six years, whose death served the catalyst for the completion of the novel “ Lunar Park ” [4] , in another he will declare that Mike would die again if he had heard the word “lover” about himself and Bret, although he recognizes the increasing mysopia , “unspecified sexuality” and experience over the years “Games on both sides of the net” ( English both sides of the fence ) [3] . In 2012, the writer still confirmed his homosexuality . [five]
Bret Easton Ellis studies music at Bennington College in New England , where in 1986 he received a bachelor's degree. One of his teachers was the writer and journalist Joe McGinnis . Later this educational institution will serve as a writer for the prototype Camden College, in which the events of his book Laws of Attractiveness will unfold. His first novel, Less Than Zero ( 1985 ), Ellis writes as a term paper on a writing workshop and publishes while still a student. The book about the full sex and violence of the life of the golden youth of Los Angeles has good reviews in the press and enjoys reader success - in the first year it has a circulation of 50 thousand copies. In 1987, Ellis moved to New York , where he released his second novel, The Laws of Attraction.
The greatest, including scandalous, fame gets published in 1991, a novel by Bret Easton Ellis “ American psychopath ”. Even before its release, the book causes sharp protests from some public organizations that have accused the author of promoting violence and misogyny. On the other hand, prominent figures of American literature, for example, Norman Mailer , come out in support of Ellis. Public discontent leads to a change of publisher, however, “American Psycho”, albeit with a certain delay, is published. The novel about Wall Street’s successful Patrick Bateman yuppie, committing (perhaps only in his fantasies) bloody murders, becomes an event in the US book market.
When screening "The Informers" (2008, directed by Gregor Jordan ), Brett Easton Ellis first appeared as a scriptwriter and producer. In 2010, the writer releases the book Imperial Bedrooms - a sequel to his debut novel, Less Than Zero.
In 2012, Ellis wrote the script for the independent film "Canyons". The Paul Schroeder film with Lindsay Lohan and James Dean was released in 2013, received mostly negative reviews from critics and collected little money at the box office [6] .
