“ Enron. The smartest guys in this room ”( Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room ) is a 2005 documentary based on the 2003 bestseller of the same name, written by Fortune reporters, Bethany McLean and Peter Elkind. This is a study of one of the largest scandals of the business world in the history of America. McLean and Elkind wrote the script for the film along with film director Alex Gibney .

The film tells about the collapse of Enron Corporation, which turned into criminal cases against the company's management. The effects of Enron traders on the California Electric Crisis of 2000-2001 are also shown (See en: California electricity crisis ).

Interviews with former managers , business analysts , reporters, and former California Governor Gray Davis are shown.

The film won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Documentary at the 78th Academy Awards in 2006.

Content

Story

The documentary is investigating the biggest financial fraud in US history. The top of Enron has tremendous power and is virtually uncontrollable; it aims to make easy money. Due to the fact that the company's real production was in decline, Enron relied on the energy futures and derivatives market. In addition, they had to fake financial statements and look for other, easier ways to earn money. Hundreds of subsidiaries were opened in offshore areas through which electricity deals went through, inflating the cost of electricity for Enron . Then, these companies began to write off the costs of the corporation, thereby improving the main reporting. But sooner or later, the fraudulent scheme should have been revealed ...
