Sports career
Mansdorf, who won six victories in the Grand Prix and ATP tournaments and at the peak of his career took 18th place in the ATP ranking , is the most titled tennis player in Israel .
In 1983, Mansdorf won the Asian Youth Tennis Championships in Hong Kong . In the same year he switched to professional tennis and at the same time began military service; he was allowed to continue to participate in international tournaments, but to a limited extent. In particular, he took part in a tennis tournament at the Los Angeles Olympics , where he lost in the first round.
In his first season as a professional, Mansdorf makes his way to the finals of two “challengers” : in Ashkelon (where he is inferior to Shlomo Glikshtein ) and Helsinki . But he won his first tournament of this level only in 1986, after he had been in the singles final of the Tel-Aviv Open Grand Prix tournament and in the doubles in the final of the Open Championship of South Africa . The first victory comes to him also in Israel, in Jerusalem . In the same year, Mansdorf also wins his first Grand Prix tournament in Johannesburg .
In 1987, Mansdorf won the Tel-Aviv Open, defeating Jimmy Connors in the semifinals. After that, he rises to the highest for himself eighteenth position in the ranking. The following year, he wins two more singles Grand Prix tournaments. In one of them, the Open Championship of Paris , he wins the first racket of the world by Mats Wilander in the first round. This year, he also participates in the Olympic tournament in Seoul and reaches the 1/8 finals, where he is inferior to the future vice-champion, Tim Mayotte .
In the future, Mansdorf participates in one or two finals of the Grand Prix tournaments, and then the APR per year. Usually these are small tournaments without the participation of world elite players. Nevertheless, in 1989, Mansdorf beat Thomas Muster and Brad Gilbert in one of the tournaments before losing to the fourth racket of the world at that time in the semi-finals to Edberg . In 1990, he defeated Gilbert at the US Open . In 1991, on the way to the finals of the tournament in Toulouse, Mansdorf, ranked 56th in the ranking, defeated the players of the world twenty Magnus Gustafsson and Alexander Volkov .
In 1992, he achieved his highest success in Grand Slam tournaments , making his way to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open . There he is stopped by Jim Courier sown under the second number. Then, at the US Pro Indoor tournament in Philadelphia, Mansdorf defeats the third racket of the Stich world, but loses to Pete Sampras in the final.
In 1993 , in his penultimate year in professional tennis, Mansdorf reached the final of three tournaments, including winning the ATP Gold series tournament in Washington , and in 1994 he had to leave tennis on the eve of his 29th birthday because of the chronic fatigue syndrome .
In the Davis Cup, Mansdorf played 47 games for the Israeli national team , including 35 singles (18 wins and 17 losses) and 12 in pairs (4 wins, 8 losses). With his help, the Israeli team achieved its highest success in the Davis Cup until 2009 , making it to the quarterfinals of the World Group in 1987 after winning a away victory over the Czechoslovak team . Mansdorf won both singles in that match, including the brilliant performance of that year, Milosław Mechirz . Over the years, as part of the Davis Cup, he also defeated Yannick Noah , Mark Rosset and Jacob Glasek .
Amos Mansdorf currently heads the Israeli Tennis Center. In April 2012, he became the personal trainer of Svetlana Kuznetsova [1] , but they broke up after six weeks [2] . In 2013, Amos led the team in the Federation Cup in the home zone tournament competitions. [3]
