Ponza ( Italian. Ponza ) - an island in the Tyrrhenian Sea near the west coast of the Peninsula . Administratively, the island of Ponza is a commune of Ponza within the province of Latina in the Lazio region.

Geography
The island is part of the Pontine Islands , the largest of them. The island is 5.5 miles (8.8 km) long, with a maximum width of about 1.5 miles (2.4 km). The area is 7.3 km².
The emergence of the island is associated with volcanic activity.
History
The Romans used the islands of Ponza and Ventotene for breeding fish. Pontz has preserved the Grotto di Pilato fish-breeding complexes. Also on Ventotene (and to a lesser extent on Ponza) there are remnants of Roman port facilities.
The islands were abandoned in the Middle Ages due to raids by the Saracens and pirates, although Ponza, for example, is mentioned in Boccaccio’s “ Decameron ” (the sixth story of the second day). In the 18th century, the kingdom of Naples re-colonized the islands.
