Biography and Activities
Mark Shatunovsky was born in 1954 in Baku. He graduated from the philological faculty of Moscow State University . During his studies, he gained recognition as a poet, in 1978-80 he was the headman of the poetry studio Luch at Moscow University, and in 1979 and 1981 he participated in All-Union meetings of young writers. He participated in a poetry workshop by Kirill Kovalji , is one of the organizers of the Moscow club "Poetry" , which brought together young writers and poets of the 1970s and 80s. It works within the framework of metarealism . In 1993, he published the literary newspaper The Well-intentioned Centaur, which is oriented towards the literary underground.
At the invitation of the Department of Culture, Education, and Information, the United States delivered lectures and poetry at universities in New York , Washington , San Francisco , Santa Fe, and Iowa . As part of the University of Iowa's international writing program, Mark Shatunovsky, together with English writer Rolf Hughes, created 100 Words (1993-1998): each issue was dedicated to a specific topic and consisted of no more than 100 words.
In 1992, in absentia admitted to the Union of Writers . 1997, together with John Khai , Vadim Mesyats and Yevgeny Bunimovich, he was a member of the organizing committee of the international poetry festival "Russian poetry through the eyes of Americans." Member and one of the founders of the Moscow Poetry Club at the Stella Art Foundation. Member of the poetic project “Making words” of the 53rd Venice Biennale .
Poems, fragments from the novel and numerous essays were translated into English and French and published in the magazines Five Fingers (USA), 6ix (USA), 100 words (USA), Lettres russes (France), "Glas" (Russia-England), in the almanac of "Poesie des Regions d`Europe" (Belgium), etc.
Critics of the author
In the verses of our author is a struggle. The struggle for survival: a pugnacious dialogue between the Great Child and the fallen versifier. Fight with varying success. Either the Beautiful Child annihilates the erudite interlocutor, then the erudite interlocutor destroys the inconsistent youth. And the "third way" is here somewhere - in the half-disappearance of both fighters.
Mark Shatunovsky pushes the ordinary (bum jackdaws) and kind of like a sublime (garbage land - remember in the famous song: garbage wind ...), the moon with the ebb of persimmon and monumental smokes, Winnie and Piglet and "indulge in laziness", a bottle of beer and you, like a Gothic the cathedral ... Such clashes during the reading period are recognized, as when playing hide and seek - hidden under your feet: we see all the secrets at once, immediately we manage to decipher everything. Poems are sometimes dragged on by the plot: you think that here - the end, but no - you move on, and a new meaning winds up on the old yeast. But only you throw off all this unnecessary zaum, as something begins to shine beyond your gaze and mind, beckoning you somewhere. That spirit, which you seem to have caught, but have not yet consolidated in the development room painted in a red light.

... Mark Shatunovsky’s poetry casts doubt on Brodsky’s system of priorities in the binary opposition “vanguard-rearguard”. But not in the sense that one should be more important than the other. In his poems, the avant-garde and tradition do not fight among themselves, as, however, and do not just coexist in the spirit of tolerance and politically correct disregard for other aesthetics. They interact very actively, trying to create new opportunities and forms of vision and interpretation of the world.

Mark Shatunovsky has a rare combination of qualities: organic, pronounced, sometimes causing independence and at the same time - cultural breadth, sophistication. On the one hand - aesthetic insolence, on the other - cordial delicacy and selflessness. The originality of talent is striking, and self-centeredness is almost imperceptible. Sensitivity to everything new, avant-garde and indestructible love for Moscow antiquity ...
