General Information

Andrea from a tennis family - her father (and first coach) Zoran - was involved in games for the national team of Yugoslavia in the Davis Cup ; Andrea's mother, Amira, is a dental assistant; Petkovic's parents are Bosnian Serbs . [5] [6] Andrea also has a younger sister, Anya. It was father who brought the native of Tuzla to tennis when she was 6 years old.

Andrea prefers to act behind the back line; favorite blow - forehand; favorite coating is soil. Now the German is training at the Vaske - Schuttler Academy, studying under the guidance of Dutch specialist Eric van Harpen. [7]

Sports career

Early years

Training under the guidance of Father Andrea, in 2000, she grew up to participate in the ITF Senior Junior Tour competitions. For several seasons at a similar level, Petkovich was able to achieve such a level of stability that she was able to play comparatively successfully many times in competitions of the highest categories and get to the spot in the first fifty of the local singles rating. From time to time, the progress of the young tennis player was noted by the national federation, which provided her with the opportunity to play in various competitions held under her auspices: already in 2002, Andrea was able to play her first WTA tournament , noting herself in the qualification of the tournament in Hamburg . Periodic appearances at protour competitions for the time being do not bring any significant results and for the first time Petkovich was able to get into the rating classification only according to the results of 2004, when she also won her first title at this level - having won the 10-thousandth tournament in Turkish Antalya in a single competition. In the same year, her first doubles title was won at a similar level: together with Sofia Avakova, the German woman became the strongest in the tournament similar to the Turkish prize in Podgorica , where Andrea became the absolute champion.

A gradual increase in athletic performance allows you to play more and more status tournaments: in the fall of 2006, after several semi-finals at a similar level, Petkovic won her first 25-thousandth, having won competitions in Sofia , and a few weeks later defeated the player Rambler's Top100: being stronger than Maria Elena Camerin in the qualification of the WTA tournament in Hasselt . The growing positive stability of the results allows the German woman to gradually approach the border of the second hundred, and in February 2007 to overcome it. This event was additionally noted by the coaching staff of the German national teams, who invited Andrea to the team in the Federation Cup and gave her to play a debut match there. [8] A successful series of results continued further: in May, the German woman took part in the qualification of the adult Grand Slam tournament for the first time and was able to immediately win four matches at a similar level, making her way to the second round of the Roland Garros base, where she was not easily stopped by the then 21- I'm the racket of the world Marion Bartoli . The rest of the 2007 season passed in the final breakthrough to the border of the first hundred of the rating: in July Petkovich improved her most status victory by winning the 50-thousandth in Contrexville ; a few weeks later, Andrea played for the first time without selection the main draw of the Grand Slam tournament - as in France, Petkovic had previously made it to the second round at the US Open .

The takeoff ended in early 2008, when Andrea in the first round of the Australian Open, due to her unsuccessful action, she tore the cruciate ligaments on her right knee, having been out of action for eight months. [6]

Return and second peak of results

Petkovich returned to service in the fall - during the European soil series. A long absence at the tournaments threw the German into the fifth hundred classification, but thanks to a secure rating and her own good shape from the very first tournaments after returning, she was able to quickly return lost positions. The very first tournament - the 50,000th in Maribor - ended in the doubles title, and by the end of the calendar year it was only possible to win the first single prize in the current rating. In 2009, the results gradually began to reach the level of 2007: Petkovich successfully won the European spring soil series, having won the title at the 100-thousandth in Bucharest , the semi-finals at a similar tournament in Torhout and the finals at the 50-thousandth in Latina , thanks to which Andrea almost by May crept up to the first hundred ratings. and in early June, thanks to the semi-finals of the 100 thousandth in Marseille , and overcome it. In July, she managed to apply good sportswear at the WTA tournaments : Petkovich got to her debut finals at this level in the Austrian Bad Gastein - in the singles in the title match, the Romanian Yoana-Raluka Olaru was defeated, and in the doubles (together with compatriot Tatyana Malek ) Petkovich lost in the future, one of the strongest pairs of the women's tour - the alliance Lucia Gradeckaya / Andrea Glavachkova . The subsequent hard season brought some more good results at this level - shortly after the Austrian success, Andrea reached the semifinal of the tournament in Istanbul , and a couple of months later - at a major tournament in Tokyo - she was able to beat the current Top10 player for the first time, leaving Svetlana Kuznetsova out of work .

In 2010, progress continued: Petkovich became an increasingly visible opponent for players of any level. is fixed in the first hundred of the rating and towards the end of the season is getting closer to Top32. Local failures only increase the desire to improve: after losing in the first round of Wimbledon, the German woman for the first time in the series tournament breaks into the fourth round. After a year, the level of results increases even more - the German regularly appears in the late stages of major tournaments and by the end of October rises to the ninth place. Three times this season Petkovich made it to the quarter finals at Grand Slam tournaments: in Australia, the result is the most significant - on the way to this result, she manages to beat Maria Sharapova , who was on the sixth line of the rating on the eve of the tournament. The success in tournaments in Brisbane , Miami , Strasbourg , Carlsbad , Toronto , Cincinnati and Beijing , where the German won one title, played in the finals a couple of times and three times in the semi-final stage, also contributed to the rating increase. The German’s most successful success was success in China, where Andrea, against the background of her starting knee problems [9] [10], managed to break into the final match, where Agnieszka Radwanska beat her easily.

New injuries and return to tour

The start of the 2012 season went without much brilliance, and already at her second tournament - in Sydney - Andrea exacerbated a minor back injury [11] and was forced to miss four months. Having returned to duty at the beginning of the unpaved season, Petkovic played only a couple of tournaments and was injured again - at the prize in Stuttgart , reaching for the ball, the German turned up her ankle [12] and went out of action until the end of August. The new return was more successful from the point of view of health - Andrea played without injuries until January of the next, slowing down her drop in the rating a little, thanks to the semi-finals of the local WTA tournament in Luxembourg . A new nuisance awaited Petkovic at the 2013 Hopman Cup , where she tore the meniscus , [13] after which she missed another three months.

This series of injuries significantly affected the rating of Petkovic and, once again, having returned to the tour, she was already considered only the 177th racket of the world. The retreating injuries and the experience gained in previous years in the matches with the leaders of the women's round allowed Andrea to quickly return to the first hundred of the ranking: already on the American tournament sheaf, the German twice reached the third round in single events, then she played in the Stuttgart prize semi-final in a pair (in the alliance with Academy neighbor Angelica Kerber ). However, minor health problems reappeared: pain in the right ankle [14] did not allow the European spring season to be played with due effect, but in June all problems finally receded: the German won the 100,000th in Marseilles and then reached the finals of the WTA tournament in Nuremberg . Later, during the hard season, the successful series continued: Andrea played in another WTA single finals finals: in Washington , and then reached the quarter finals of the Cincinnati competition in pairs: together with Kerber, they managed to stop the played pair Marina Erakovich / Kara Black . Until the end of the season, several more successful tournaments were held, which allowed Petkovic to finish the year in Top40.

The 2014 season did not start very efficiently, but after the change of coach, Andrea gradually began to return to her best results in the dirt season. In April, beating Lucia Shafarzhova and Eugenie Bouchard , the German woman won her first title in three years, becoming the strongest in the tournament in Charleston . The season before Roland Garros brought another significant victory: for the first time in twelve years, the German national team was able to overcome the intermediate stages of the Federation Cup and reach the final; and Andrea won the opening games twice as part of the match meetings, contributing to the victories of the Germans in matches against buzzwords and Australians. In May-June, the next major surge in personal tournaments took place: Petkovich first reached the semifinals of the French Grand Slam tournament in singles, and a few weeks later achieved a similar result in the Wimbledon doubles competition in an alliance with Magdalena Rybarikova .
