History
The city appeared in 1944 by the union of two villages - Nizhny Svidnik and Vyshny Svidnik.
In ancient times, the territory of Swidnik lay on the Amber Road to the Baltic Sea , which passed here through the Dukelsky Pass . Later here, on the Kastielik hill, the Slavs built their fort . Later, in the XIV century , a castle was built here , destroyed in the XVIII century .
In the 19th century, epidemics and crop failures fall on the edge. The population in large numbers in search of a better life emigrated to the United States and Canada . The surrounding area of the city was badly damaged during the First World War . After World War I, Swidnik belonged to the poorest regions of Czechoslovakia . The wave of emigration has not subsided.
During World War II, Swidnik became the site of fierce battles between the Soviet and German armies and again suffered severe destruction.
After the war, the industrialization of the city began, which led to better life in the region.
A feature of Swidnik is the fact that this is one of the two regions of Slovakia with a predominance of the Orthodox (20%) and Uniate (37%) population.
