Eight islands are divided between three separate California counties: Santa Barbara (four islands), Ventura (two islands) and Los Angeles (two islands). The islands are divided into two groups - the Northern Channel Islands and the Southern Channel Islands . The archipelago extends for 257.5 kilometers (160 miles). The northernmost island is San Miguel, the southern one is San Clementine. The total area of the islands is 908.8 km² (221 331 acres , or about 346 square miles). On the five islands of the archipelago (San Miguel, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Anacapa and Santa Barbara), the Channel Island National Park was founded in 1980 . Only on the island of Santa Catalina are permanent settlements - Avalon and Two Harbors.

These islands are the only habitat of the dwarf species of foxes - the island fox .
